Overall, agriculture was the dominant use of water in every region except North America, where industrial use was instead the largest category, and domestic use was consistently the smallest proportion everywhere.

Agricultural use ranged from a high of 88% in Central Asia and 84% in Africa, down to just 39% in North America, the only region where it did not account for the majority of water use. South East Asia and South America followed a similar pattern to Africa and Central Asia, with agriculture consuming 81% and 72% of water respectively.

North America stood out with industrial use at 48%, far higher than any other region, and higher than its own agricultural use of 39%. Europe had the most balanced distribution of the six regions, with agriculture at 53%, industry at 32%, and domestic use at 15%, the highest domestic figure recorded. Domestic use otherwise stayed within a narrow band of 6% to 9% across the remaining four regions.
