Band 9

259 words

Names a specific psychological phenomenon and resolves the debate by distinguishing advertisement types, rather than picking one side wholesale.

Whether advertising remains a powerful persuasive force or has become so pervasive that people simply tune it out is a genuinely debatable question, and I believe the truth lies somewhere between these two positions, with the specific format and context of an advertisement determining which effect dominates.

There is strong evidence that advertising remains remarkably effective. Companies continue to spend enormous sums on marketing precisely because carefully targeted campaigns, particularly on social media, measurably increase sales, and techniques such as influencer endorsements or personalised online ads can bypass the scepticism that people bring to more traditional, obvious advertisements.

At the same time, there is genuine truth to the claim that much everyday advertising is now ignored. Consumers are exposed to hundreds of adverts daily, from banner ads to sponsored posts, and psychological research on 'banner blindness' shows that people have developed an almost automatic ability to filter out generic, repetitive advertising that fails to offer anything genuinely novel or relevant to them. Studies tracking eye movement on webpages have repeatedly shown that users' eyes skip directly over anything resembling a typical banner advertisement, regardless of its actual content, which suggests the problem lies with the format itself rather than any particular advertisement's message.

In my view, the key distinction is between generic, mass-market advertising, which is now largely ignored, and highly targeted, creative, or personally relevant advertising, which remains genuinely persuasive. In conclusion, rather than advertising being uniformly successful or uniformly ignored, its effectiveness now depends heavily on how well it is targeted and how creatively it is delivered.

Examiner Notes

Task Response: Fully discusses both views with genuine balance before reaching a clear, well-justified position, and the specific reference to 'banner blindness' research gives the argument real substance.

Coherence & Cohesion: Each paragraph carries a distinct function, and cohesive devices ("at the same time", "in conclusion") link them naturally throughout.

Lexical Resource: Wide range of precise vocabulary ("pervasive", "bypass the scepticism", "mass-market") used with natural collocation.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy: Wide range of complex structures, including relative clauses and non-finite clauses, used with full accuracy.

Band 8

254 words

A well-balanced discussion let down only slightly by a less tightly integrated final resolution.

Some people believe advertising is very successful at persuading people to buy things, while others think advertising is so common that people no longer notice it. In this essay, I will discuss both views before giving my opinion.

There is good evidence that advertising is still very effective. Companies spend enormous amounts of money on advertising because carefully targeted campaigns, especially on social media, can clearly increase sales, and things like influencer marketing can convince people who might otherwise ignore more traditional adverts.

On the other hand, it is also true that people see so many advertisements every day, from banner ads to sponsored social media posts, that many people have learned to ignore most of them without even noticing. Psychologists call this phenomenon 'banner blindness', where people's brains automatically filter out repetitive or generic advertising. Studies that track people's eye movements on websites have shown that users often skip straight past anything that looks like a typical banner advertisement, no matter what it actually says, suggesting the problem is with the format itself rather than the specific message being shown. This is a genuinely important finding for advertisers to understand.

In my opinion, the truth is somewhere in between these two views. Generic advertising that people see all the time is often ignored, but advertising that is well targeted, creative, or personally relevant to someone still works very effectively.

In conclusion, I believe advertising's success depends heavily on how targeted and creative it is, rather than being either always persuasive or always ignored.

Examiner Notes

Task Response: Fully discusses both views with a clear, well-supported opinion, including the specific term 'banner blindness', though the resolution is slightly less integrated than the band 9 answer's.

Coherence & Cohesion: Clear five-paragraph structure with accurate cohesive devices throughout.

Lexical Resource: Good range of vocabulary, though "very effective" is a little more general than the higher-band answer's more precise phrasing.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy: Mostly accurate complex sentences with only rare minor slips.

Band 7

255 words

A clear, well-reasoned answer that would be stronger with one concrete example to anchor its argument.

Some people think advertising is very good at persuading people to buy things, while other people think advertising is so common now that people do not pay attention to it anymore. I will discuss both views and then give my opinion.

People who think advertising is successful say that companies would not spend so much money on it if it did not work. They also say that new types of advertising, like social media ads and celebrity endorsements, can be very effective at convincing people to buy products.

On the other hand, some people think that because we see so many advertisements every day, we have started to ignore most of them without even realising it. For example, many people scroll past ads on their phone without even looking at them properly.

In my opinion, I think both views can be true depending on the type of advertisement. Advertisements that are targeted at the right people or that are very creative can still work well, but generic advertisements that we see too often are often ignored. For example, banner adverts on websites are often ignored completely because people have learned to expect them in the same place every time, while a surprising or unusual advertisement, like a creative billboard, is much more likely to actually get noticed. This shows the format really does matter.

In conclusion, I believe advertising can still be persuasive, but only when it is done in a targeted or creative way, rather than being repeated the same way over and over.

Examiner Notes

Task Response: Discusses both views and gives a clear opinion, but no specific real-world example (a brand, a psychological term) is used to support either side, unlike in the higher-band answers.

Coherence & Cohesion: Organised clearly with one paragraph per view; cohesive devices ("On the other hand", "In conclusion") are accurate but predictable.

Lexical Resource: Adequate range for the task, with some repetition of "advertisement" and "ignore" throughout.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy: Generally accurate mix of simple and complex sentences; meaning is always clear.

Band 6.5

251 words

The discussion is well balanced, but agreement errors on nearly every key task word noticeably lower the score.

Some people think advertising is very good at persuading people to buy thing, while other people think advertising is so common now that people do not pay attention to it anymore. I will discuss both view and then give my opinion.

People who think advertising is successful say that company would not spend so much money on it if it did not work. They also say that new type of advertising, like social media ad and celebrity endorsement, can be very effective at convincing people to buy product.

Examiner Notes

Task Response: Discusses both views and gives a clear opinion, matching the content of the band 7 answer, but grammar errors throughout reduce clarity.

Coherence & Cohesion: Follows the same one-paragraph-per-view structure as the higher-band answers.

Lexical Resource: Limited by missing plurals on key task words ("advertisement", "view", "product") used throughout instead of their plural forms.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy: Frequent subject-verb agreement errors ("company would not spend", "both view can be true", "advertisement that is targeted") appear on nearly every sentence.

Band 4-5 - What to Avoid

45 words

Names both views but never actually discusses either one in any depth.

Some people think ad is good for selling thing, other people think ad is ignore now.

I think ad still work sometime, but people see too many ad every day.

In conclusion I think it depend on ad, this is my opinion about this topic.

Examiner Notes

Task Response: Both views are named but neither is properly discussed, each gets a single unsupported sentence, so the instruction to 'discuss both views' is not really fulfilled. At well under 250 words, the response is also underlength.

Coherence & Cohesion: Paragraphs list opinions without connecting them into a developing argument.

Lexical Resource: Extremely basic and repetitive vocabulary ("ad", "good", "think") with no attempt at more varied language.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy: Frequent errors, including missing plurals and subject-verb agreement ("ad is ignore now").
