The most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Band 9

Uses specific historical examples (electromagnetism, nuclear physics) to support its nuanced position rather than making only general claims.

Science has undeniably transformed human life through advances in medicine, agriculture, and technology, and while I largely agree that improving people's lives should be science's primary aim, I believe this should not be its only purpose.

There is strong support for the view that science should prioritise improving lives. Medical research, for instance, has eradicated diseases that once killed millions and has extended average life expectancy dramatically over the past century, while agricultural science has enabled crop yields sufficient to feed a global population several times larger than a century ago. When science is directed towards solving concrete human problems, such as developing vaccines or clean energy technologies, the benefits are immediate, measurable, and widely felt.

However, I do not believe improving lives should be viewed as science's exclusive purpose. A great deal of important scientific progress originated in pure research driven purely by curiosity about how the universe works, with no immediate practical application in mind. Early research into electromagnetism or nuclear physics, for example, was not conducted to solve a specific human problem, yet it eventually led to technologies, from electricity generation to medical imaging, that have profoundly improved human welfare. Restricting scientific inquiry only to research with obvious immediate benefits risks closing off exactly the kind of unexpected discoveries that later prove most transformative.

There is also value in scientific knowledge for its own sake, independent of any practical application; understanding the origins of the universe or the mechanisms of evolution enriches human understanding in ways that are difficult to quantify but nonetheless meaningful.

In conclusion, while I largely agree that improving human lives is and should remain science's most important practical aim, I believe curiosity-driven research retains genuine value, partly because it frequently produces the unexpected breakthroughs that improve lives most dramatically in the long run.

Science has greatly improved human life through advances in medicine, agriculture, and technology, and I largely agree that improving people's lives should be science's main aim, although I do not think it should be the only purpose.

There is strong support for this view. Medical research has eliminated diseases that once killed many people and has increased average life expectancy significantly, while agricultural science has allowed food production to keep up with a much larger global population. When science focuses on solving real human problems, such as developing vaccines, the benefits are clear and widely felt.

However, I do not think improving lives should be science's only purpose. Much important scientific progress began as pure research driven by curiosity, without any immediate practical goal. Early research into electricity, for example, was not intended to solve a specific problem, but it eventually led to technologies that have greatly improved human life. If science only focused on research with obvious immediate benefits, some important discoveries might never be made.

There is also value in scientific knowledge simply for its own sake, such as understanding the universe, even if it does not directly improve anyone's life immediately.

In conclusion, while I largely agree that improving human lives should be science's most important aim, I believe curiosity-driven research still has real value, partly because it often leads to the unexpected discoveries that improve lives the most. Space exploration is a good modern example of this, since much of the technology developed for space missions later found unexpected everyday applications in fields such as medicine and telecommunications.

Science has helped improve people's lives in many ways, such as medicine and technology. I mostly agree that this should be the most important aim of science, but not the only one.

Medical research has helped cure diseases and has made people live longer. Science has also helped grow more food for a bigger population. When science focuses on solving real problems, the benefits are clear.

However, I do not think improving lives should be the only goal of science. Some important scientific discoveries came from curiosity, not from trying to solve a problem. For example, early research into electricity was not made to solve a specific problem, but it later helped create many useful technologies.

There is also value in learning about things like the universe, even if it does not directly help anyone right away.

In conclusion, I mostly agree that improving lives should be the most important aim of science, but I think curiosity-driven research is also valuable because it can lead to unexpected discoveries later. I think science should help people.

Doctor use science to cure sick people, this is good.

Examiner Notes

Task Response: Gives only a single unsupported sentence in favour of the statement, with no example or acknowledgement of any other view, so the extent question is never genuinely addressed. At well under 250 words, the response is also underlength.

Coherence & Cohesion: Paragraphs are short, disconnected statements with minimal linking.

Lexical Resource: Vocabulary is basic and repetitive ("good", "important", "think") with little variation.
